¡Moment of fame!

Our profession is often a very lonely business until these gems come along.

I had the immense honor, thanks to Counselor Rodrigo Almeida, Head of the Cultural Sector of the Brazilian Embassy in Buenos Aires, to translate “Oração aos moços” (Prayer for Youth) from Portuguese into Spanish, which is one of the six official languages of the UN (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish), in the context of the exhibition “Rui Barbosa: Cidadão do Mundo” that was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on July 4-28, 2022 during the Brazilian presidency of the Security Council, which was organized by the Permanent Mission of Brazil to the UN and the Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa.

Ruy Barbosa (1849-1923) was a Brazilian writer, jurist, and politician, deputy, senator, minister of finance and taxes, and diplomat. His literary production includes, among other works, “Oração aos moços” (Prayer for Youth), which was a speech given in 1920 to law graduates. Considered as one of the jurist’s most brilliant reflections on the role of magistrates and the lawyer’s mission, the author looks back on his own life as a lawyer, journalist, and politician as an example for the following generations.
